How Much Will Brexit Cost Me?

Costs per UK household

Pre-Brexit EU Membership

£406 /year

Includes all money sent directly to and from the EU. This figure would be smaller if all the benefits to households from EU membership were included.

Now, after Brexit

£5,251 /year

Costs and effects of the final deal published so far (eg 150,000 extra civil servants) plus the promised replacement of EU funding (eg to UK farming) etc. This will increase as more costs are revealed/announced.

Latest: £20m SME Brexit Support Fund, £5.7m 2020 rent for Waterbrook lorry park, £23m to compensate fish export businesses, £1bn to replace 2-yearly chemicals registration, Lost £990m/y increase in EU grants for Cornwall W. & S. Wales, Help for NI firms trading with UK £355m + £100m/year. £93m "Get Ready" adverts. £705m Port infrastructure. Extra 50,000 customs agents £1.5bn/year ...

This site attempts to show the real costs of the Brexit transition and the on-going cost to the UK economy and households, based on government announcements and other public documents.

After the 2016 referendum, the government had 4 years to decide how costly our future trade with the EU would be. Unfortunately the Johnson government deliberately chose a very 'thin' trade deal that will maximise the cost for UK companies and to the economy, and will badly affect trade with our most significant market.

We are lucky that the EU is not implementing all of the restrictions immediately (given that the initial restrictions alone have already caused significant problems). The full cost of the trade barriers caused by the deal will only be revealed gradually over 2021, as the EU fully implements the restrictions chosen by the Johnson government.

The Johnson government's Brexit deal will cost at least £5,251/year for every UK household (over 12 times than it cost for our EU membership/year!). This is a disaster for families and the economy. That's the reality of the Johnson government's deal.

The government could have chosen a deal that would cost the UK much less - as promised during the referendum campaign - e.g. a deal closer to "Norway+" or being in the Single Market/Customs Union. We avoided crashing out with no deal, which would have been even more costly, but the current deal is a disaster.

MPs do still have power. They must now put the economic security of the UK first, before party loyalty, and force the government to face the reality of these crippling costs. It is very unlikely that the EU will agree to fix the fundamental problems caused by the government's deal, but they may agree to fix some of the problems (like musician visas or fish exports). Anything that can be done to reduce the catastrophe will be a bonus, and the sooner the government starts communicating with the EU properly, the sooner the fundamental problems can be fixed!

Please contact your MP and urge them to force the government to act. If the full effects of the government's deal are inflicted on households and the economy, we will all suffer for years into the future.

The longer Parliament does not act in the best interest of the country, the bigger the disaster will be. You must act now.
